PROGRAMMES OFFERED THROUGH ITLD

BA – Guidance and Counselling

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree Guidance and Counselling is accredited by the University Council of
Jamaica. This programme is offered in two (2) forms. A degree completion programme designed for
Teachers or allied professionals who are Diploma graduates with at least a B average, and as such would
already have the required foundation courses in Education.
The course lasts for a minimum of two and a half (2½) years and requires a total of forty-eight (48) credits.
Persons without a diploma can apply and pursue the 123 credit programme which last for 4 years.

BA Media & Communication Arts

The study of the media is traditionally associated with the study of mass media, primarily radio, television
and newspaper. Students of Media & Communication Arts will be exposed to the use and care of the
broadcast equipment. These include microphones, cables, jacks, consoles, professional tape recorders,
cameras, editing computer and software. They will learn the pros and cons of computer editing and dub
editing. Courses include Oral Communication, Radio Production, Media Events Planning and Contemporary
Issues in Media Policy.

BA General Studies

The BA in General Studies provides students with the opportunity to creatively combine courses from a
number of fields including Psychology, Business, Community Development, Theology, and Programme and
Project Management among others. Courses include Music Appreciation, Contemporary Literature, Hospitality
Management, Business Administration and Education.

BA – Theology

The Bachelor of Arts in Theology provides training for individuals who wish to engage in Christian Ministry or
Christian Service (in any denomination). The programme is highly flexible and studentoriented. It seeks to
provide graduates with wide-ranging competencies which can then open the door to exciting options or further
study. Funding can be accessed from the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB) for this accredited programme.
Students will have to apply for and meet the SLB requirements to access funding. Courses include Introduction
to Old and New Testaments, Caribbean Church History, Bible Study Methods, Evangelistic Missions, Caribbean
Ethics and Christology.

BA Psychology

This Degree in Psychology will place you on the road to culture-responsive leadership in areas such as Teaching,
Care-giving professions, Community-based programmes as well as Research including the work of Non-
governmental organizations. The programme is highly flexible and student-oriented. It also seeks to provide
graduates with wide-ranging competencies which can then open the door to lucrative employment options
or further study. Courses include Communication Skills, Fundamentals of Psychology, Context and Skills
Analysis, Abnormal Psychology and Research Methods 1 and 11.

BA Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management is a dynamic field that has been undergoing significant changes in recent years.
The increased realization that the human resource is a vital organizational component has given human
resource management recognition as a critical element in the achievement of organizational effectiveness. In
order to achieve competitive advantage, organizations are increasingly looking at human resource management
at the operational and strategic levels.

BEd Primary Education

The Bachelor of Primary Education (B.Ed.) is designed for teachers who wish to sharpen their teaching
competencies in the area of primary education. The programme offers the flexibility of both fulltime and part
time studies and emphasizes the methodological aspects of the related subject areas which seek to bolster
the years of experience garnered by classroom teachers. The programme is divided into the sixty (60) credit
programme which is designed for practicing teachers at the Diploma level and the one hundred and thirty five
(135) credit programme for persons entering with the requisite secondary qualification. Courses include
Mathematics Methodology, Language Arts Methodology, Practicum Theory, Testing and Evaluation and
Educational Administration. This programme is accredited by the University Council in Jamaica (UCJ).
Applicants may apply to the Students’ Loan Bureau to access funding to purse this degree.
