Constituent Colleges

IUC operates through constituent colleges - the Institute for Theological and Leadership Development (ITLD)
and Mel Nathan College (MNC).
ITLD was started in 1989 and MNC which is the tertiary arm of Mel Nathan
Institute (MNI) was founded in 2004. (MNI was founded in 1978).
Both the ITLD and MNC are registered with the University Council of Jamaica.

Institute for Theological and Leadership Development (ITLD)

ITLD was founded in 1989 and was driven by the recognition of the importance of learning by doing. ITLD
started with two flagship programmes, the B.A. in Theology and the B.A. in Guidance and Counselling. It
was in the Theology programmes that ITLD’s philosophy was most evident. Whereas it was the practice for
Theological students to spend three or four years in training before being formally assigned to a Church, ITLD
revolutionized that by having students spend three weeks in each month working in a church or other ministry
context and one week in classroom activity over the three or four years of their period of study.

Mel Nathan College (MNC)

Mel Nathan College (MNC) functions as one of the two constituent Colleges of the International University of
the Caribbean (IUC) and began operation in September 2004, as the tertiary arm of the Mel Nathan Institute
for Development and Social Research (MNI).

MNI has operated as the human and community development agency of the United Church in Jamaica and
the Cayman Islands since 1978 and brings a mission-focussed approach to human and community
development. Drawing on a popular education mode of programme delivery, MNI has prided itself in what has
come to be appreciated as a practitioner's perspective on people empowerment and community development.
In operating as the tertiary arm of MNI, Mel Nathan College draws on this legacy of MNI and functions as the
beneficiary of the MNI history and ethos.
